Preliminary Ranking of Most Popular Eritrean YouTube Channels

[ትግርኛ ኣብ ታሕቲ / See below for Tigrinya]

The following is a tentative ranking of the most popular Eritrean YouTube Channels surveyed on the basis of data publicly accessible their YouTube pages (accessed on 24 April 2021). I have surveyed a total of 33 channels selected on one of the following factors or a mix of both: 1) those having more than 10 000 subscribers, or 2) those having a total of more than 1 million views. The details are reflected on the two comparative tables below.

I targeted only YouTube channels that are focused on the production of news, current events, some aspects of social life, and politically oriented content or a mix of the above. With the exception of the following, Eri-TV, Ella Records, LYE.tv and HIGDEF VISION, which are included to provide a wider comparative perspective, I focused mainly on sites/channels run by the so-called pro-democracy camp; or others, which in my view are not linked with official state ideology in Eritrea. Again, save for certain features attributable to the exceptions listed above, I have not surveyed channels that are purely focused on entertainment related content (music, drama, etc.); they can be surveyed separately. All other channels are selected on the basis of the two criteria mentioned above.

There might be some YouTube channels that may have escaped my radar screen, and by no means can my own attempt be considered as a comprehensive study. But it may helpfully serve as a starting point for a more comprehensive and systematic study. My preliminary assessment shows that from the surveyed samples the YouTube Channels of Asmarino.com and Khaled Abdu appear to be the oldest such channels. The former was launched on 08.10.2006, and the latter on 22.10.2006. From the pro-democracy camp, the YouTube Channel with the biggest number of subscribers is Assena TV with 158 thousand subscribers, followed by Mestyat Betna with 142 thousand subscribers, and Gorgo Drar’s with 129 thousand subscribers. Interestingly, I observe that just in a matter of four days – between the actual date of my initial survey (20.04.2021) and the date of publication of this brief observation (28.04.2021) the total number of subscribers for Assena TV has climbed from 158K to 159K.

Below is another simple example on: how to compare between randomly and/or purposefully selected figures and channels, and how to reach at various conclusions based on such comparisons. For example, on 24.04.2021 Alena Media TV had a total of 56 thousand subscribers and a total of 15,918,523 views. In contrast, Mahder Production, which had a greater number of subscribers at 72.6 thousand, had a total number of 3,254,166 views. The latter, which has a greater number of subscribers, seems to have a lesser number of views, compared with Alena Media TV. Why did this happen?

One very obvious explanation may be something related to the total number of videos both channels may have thus far released since their inception (figures, which are not known to me at this point in time). Alena Media TV reflects a launching date of 21.09.2013. Mahder Production reflects a launching date of 18.10.2017, which is four years after Alena Media TV. This may be one explanation for the disparity noted above. I am sure through the use of other analytical methods a broader comparative insight can be gleaned by those who have the resources to do this. On my part, I cannot go beyond this point, at least for now. What I can say is that additional and in-depth level analysis can be helpful in identifying certain patterns on the use and misuse of social media by our transnational Eritrean diaspora communities, and this may also be helpful in having a better understanding about other related issues.

The following recently concluded doctoral studies (although I have not yet read them in their entirety) may also be helpful for anyone interested in taking this research agenda to its next level by gleaning additional insights: Abraham T. Zere, Social Media in Exile: Disruptors and Challengers from Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Sudan (University of Ohio, 2020); Yonatan Tewelde, Chatroom Nation: an Eritrean Case Study of a Diaspora PalTalk Public (University of Ohio, 2020).

On a slightly different (or may be related) note, from the cover photo of this story (accessible here https://gs.statcounter.com/social-media-stats/all/eritrea), one can also learn the following statistical figures about social media usage of Eritrea: Twitter 58.91%, Facebook 36.19%, YouTube 2.2%, Pinterest 1.91%, Instagram 0.63%, and LinkedIn 0.08%.

Below are my tentative two comparative tables based on two major factors: total number of subscribers or total number views, or a combination of both.
